Wilderness Camping Class June 23-26

The class is a great environment to develop and expand your current Sea Kayaking skills and judgment.  In this class, you will learn efficient paddling and boat handling technique, effective capsize recovery skills and correct bracing techniques, which includes a new section Wilderness Camping. 

Equipment and Class Requirements:

This class is designed as a hands-on, progressive skill-building course.  As each successive session build on the previous, attendance at each of the sessions is essential to in maximize the learning progression, increasing the fun and getting the most from the class.  We have found that practice of your new skills in your future sea kayaking trips is essential to mastering your new skills.  Stretching and flexibility exercises will also help you enormously. You can expect to have fun and be challenged as you build new skills in this course.

  1. Membership in the Washington Kayak Club or BEWET  
  2. You will need to supply your own boat with flotation and all appropriate paddling gear. 
  3. In addition to PFD, spray skirt, paddle, paddle float, helmet and a hand bilge pump is required. 
  4. Since Puget Sound and San Juan water temperature is in the 46-48 degrees range all year, we require that you wear a dry suit for all outdoor sessions.
  5. You will need a helmet for the current play sessions (Deception Pass)
  6. Cost for the class is $175.00.   

The schedule for the class is:

  • Thursday, June 23, 9:00 a.m. – Washington Park, Anacortes, Bring a Helmet it is required for this trip.  Bring all your camping gear for a two-night stay, food and cooking gear, water and supplies for your personal use.
  • Friday, June 24– 9:00 a.m. Pelican Beach campsite, we will work on skills and currents.  Pack up and move to another location.  TBD
  • Saturday, June 25, 9:00 a.m. -  We will pack up and head to Washington Park pack our boats and gear and head to Deception pass Camp ground for another night of camping. (Car Camping)
  • Sunday, June 26, 9:00 a.m. Head to Bowman Bay.  We will play with the currents and use our new skills to have fun and be in control. Helmets will be required for this trip. Camp Ground will be reserved.
